Presentation Fundamentals - Powerpoint

PowerPoint slides are used in many presentations today. Here are some ppt fundamentals to consider when you are creating your slides:-

The PowerPoint slides support the presentation not the other way around. Keep them relevant to your presentation.

Keep the PowerPoint slides uncluttered. Don't put too much on each slide or it will lose its impact.

Keep text to a minimum. It becomes difficult to read and the audience can read quicker than you can speak.

Don't read your presentation from the slides because the audience may get bored

The novelty of animations have worn off, so use them sparingly in your presentation

Plan out the presentation slides and their sequence before starting to create them

Getting the presentation fundamentals right will go a long way to giving an effective presentation. The ppt slides need to support the overall presentation and be easy to follow by the audience.

Presentation Fundamentals - An Important One

Practice is also one the most important presentation fundamentals. Here are the basics of practice;-

Deliver your presentation several times in front of family and friends If possible in the room where it is to be delivered to get used to the actual conditions .

The closer the practice conditions and surroundings are to the actual conditions you will face the better prepared you will be for the actual delivery of your presentation.

You should practice your presentation until you become familiar with it and comfortable in giving it , but do not commit it to memory.

You should not commit to memory because you will probably lose the conversational quality of the presentation (which is the most effective style) and the presentation becomes inflexible.

Presentation Fundamentals - The Important one

The final part of my series on the presentation fundamentals on preparation covers getting your speech down on paper.

5. Write Your Speech - Start by outlining your speech - this is like the blueprint of a house. This will give you the structure and make it easy to see how your presentation fits together. When writing your speech use words and sentences that make it easy to read and speak. Use spoken language when writing out your speech especially if you intend to read the speech. Written language can be difficult to listen to and understand. Language that sounds great on paper does not always sound great when spoken.

Preparation is one of the most important of the presentation fundamentals because it is developing the plan of your presentation

More Presentation Fundamentals On Preparation

Here are further presentation fundamentals of careful preparation;-

2. Know your audience - who are they and what are they expecting from an effective presentation. What are the circumstances for your presentation?

3. Know Your Topic. Once you have selected your topic you need to master it. If you haven't mastered you will not be able to master the audience. The primary source of information should be from your own experienced topped up by research as needed to fill in any gaps.

4. Determine how you will structure your speech. The basic structure is introduction, main body, conclusion. Within the main body of the speech the most effective structure is in the way people would normally think about your topic e.g geographical, chronological, problem - solution etc.

The rest of the presentation fundamentals will follow in my next post.

Presentation Fundamentals - 2 Things To Get Right

Presentation fundamentals of effective presenting come down to two things - being thoroughly prepared and practice, practice, practice. These 2 presentation fundamentals also help considerably with confidence and beating stage fright. The presentation nerves will be more manageable and can be used to give a better presentation because of the adrenaline. The delivery of the speech is easier because we know what we want to say and how we are going to say it.

The presentation fundamentals of careful presentation comes down to a number of basics:-

1. Know your purpose - why are you presenting. A presentation without a purpose will waste both the presenters time and their audience. There are 3 general reasons to present - they are to inform, to persuade or to entertain.
